Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina Catamount football team continued its preseason workouts on Thursday with a morning practice on the turf at E. J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field.
The 26-session, two and a half hour practice session included more individual position work, followed by combining the positions into unit work. The final three segments of the morning practice were spent in scrimmage scenarios, again working in helmets, shoulder pads and shorts in limited contact.
The team also worked in an individual "Cat Drill," which pitted individuals against each other in varying situations while their peers looked on. Wagner indicated that having the players accountable for their individual performance, while also having teammates urging them on would help in the respect and bonding process that takes place during preseason workouts.
The WCU defensive unit had the upper hand in terms of intensity and execution, which Wagner indicated is generally the case during early season practices with a new offense. During his post-practice address to the squad, the Catamount first-year head coach also commended individuals during the "Cat Drill" exercise, but stated that as a team, each side of the ball needed to make the other better every day.
Under center, each quarterback saw an equal number of snaps and reps during the final three scrimmage sessions.
Western Carolina will work out in full pads for the first time this preseason on Friday as the squad will endure its first two-a-day practice. The Catamounts will hit the turf for their traditional early morning session, and then reconvene around 3:30 pm for a second practice time.
